Japanese Vocab Check September 2024: Something Moody

KABIN returns with our monthly Vocab Check for September. At this time of year, many of us are preparing to bid farewell to summer and embrace autumn with open arms. This transition often evokes a bittersweet feeling, doesn’t it? Today, we would like to introduce some words and phrases that capture that sentiment. Let’s explore them.

Moso「妄想」: imagination/delusion

soto o mirutomo naku nagameteitara iroirona mōsō ga ukanda.

I gazed outside, not really seeing the view, and began imagining various things.

He’s already 40, but in certain moments, he looks surprisingly youthful.

‍

Kehai「気配」: presence/glimpse

hito no kehai o kanjita ka to omottakedo, dare mo inakatta .

I thought I felt someone’s presence, but there was no one there.

Suizokukan 「水族館」:aquarium

suizokukan de burabura suru no ga suki.

I love aimlessly wandering around aquariums.

‍

‍

Kyoshu 「郷愁」: nostalgia

hisashiburi ni kono basutei ni kiteite daigaku jidai e no kyōshū o kanjiteiru .

Coming to this bus stop for the first time in a while, I’m feeling nostalgic about my college days.

Kodoku「孤独」: solitude

kekkyoku natsuyasumi o kodoku ni sugoshitakedo, omotta yori saikōdatta .

I ended up spending my summer vacation in solitude, but it was better than I expected.

Stay tuned for next month’s Vocab Check! We’re cooking up some beautiful phrases to get you right for the coming of Autumn.
