Exploring Kyoto’s Artisan Side: A Visit to Mikan Bags Studio

We had the pleasure of visiting Clementine Sandner, the founder of Mikan Bags, in her serene Kyoto studio where she crafts bags and accessories from vintage Japanese kimono fabric. We spoke with her about all the passion and work that goes into being a one-woman brand. "I founded Mikan in 2016, and it’s been eight years now, and I'm still working to find the right balance," she shares with a smile. For Clementine, creativity is a process, fueled by spontaneous visits to Kyoto’s vintage shops for inspiration. “If I feel like I need to go look for some treasures, then I’ll do that.”
‍

‍
Living in Kyoto deeply influences her designs. "Kyoto’s traditional aspect gives me a unique perspective on the fabrics I choose," Clementine explains. “These bags aren’t just accessories—they’re souvenirs that carry the history and culture of Kyoto.” Many who take her bags home feel that connection, a tangible piece of Kyoto’s culture they can bring back to their own communities.
‍

Clementine's approach to Mikan has always been about more than products. “I never wanted to create a brand just to sell things. I wanted to find a way to live doing something I can share and teach,” she says, reflecting on her past as a fashion design teacher. Today, she incorporates that love for teaching into Mikan by offering private workshops in her studio and other fascinating spots around Kyoto, including temples.
‍

‍
In the workshops, participants can either complete a full bag themselves or start the process with Clementine, who will then finish the piece and have it delivered to their hotel—including our downtown KABIN hotels. For travelers, it’s a beautiful way to both learn and take home something personal and meaningful.
‍

Mikan Bags is not a shop, but a studio, open only by private appointment, allowing Clementine to focus on each guest individually, making it perfect for beginners, seasoned sewers, and even families. “I welcome people with no sewing experience as well as those with more knowledge, and I can challenge them a bit more.” With her friendly and expert guidance, visitors walk away not just with a bag, but a unique memory from Kyoto.

For those seeking an inspiring, hands-on Kyoto experience, booking a Mikan workshop is an exceptional way to dive into Japan’s artistry and culture.  Visit the Mikan Bags website to shop their gorgeous designs and follow them on Instagram to stay up to date on all of their events and workshops!  Please send them a direct message to book your own workshop!
